A professor works with a student on her writing.

Students completing courses in the Writing and Rhetoric Program will achieve the following learning goals:

  • Students will be able to respond to the demands of a variety of writing assignments, employing a variety of writing and revision processes.
  • Students will demonstrate rhetorical awareness and respond to rhetorical conventions, including audience/genre/disciplinary expectations.
  • Students will understand the connections between critical thinking and writing and be able to engage both with confidence.
  • Students will develop a lifelong, empowering relationship with writing.

In addition, faculty should have ample opportunity and encouragement to develop their skills in teaching writing, as well as to pursue their own goals as writers.
